Chieko Kinney, B.A.

Master's Intern

Hi, I’m Chieko! I’m a student counsellor dedicated to creating compassionate and welcoming spaces for children, individuals, and families. Born and raised in Japan, I have been living in Canada since 2001. This cross-cultural experience has deepened my respect for the diverse stories and backgrounds that shape each person.

With over 20 years of experience as an Educational Assistant and a background in Early Childhood Education, I have supported the social, emotional, and developmental growth of children and youth. These experiences have influenced the calm, nurturing, and relational approach I bring to my counselling practice.

My Approach

My approach is grounded in presence, empathy, and curiosity. I believe healing happens through connection — when individuals feel truly seen, heard, and accepted without judgment. I have participated in Synergetic Play Therapy training, which has greatly enhanced my ability to support emotional expression, nervous system regulation, and trauma integration, particularly with children. Additionally, I am exploring how polyvagal theory and somatic practices can help clients of all ages reconnect with their bodies and inner experiences in compassionate and meaningful ways.

I am committed to practicing cultural humility and understanding intersectionality. I enjoy travelling and learning about different cultures, which continually broadens my appreciation for the unique experiences people bring. This inspires me to approach every relationship with openness, respect, and genuine care.

Whether you’re a caregiver seeking support for your child, a young person navigating change, or an individual looking for a safe and understanding space, I am here to walk alongside you. Together, we can explore, engage, and express your inner world in a way that feels safe and supported.

I look forward to meeting you.
